![]() Collaborating with these kinds of people?.A job shadow experience helps you answer these questions: Think of job shadowing as a way to step onto a stage and imagine yourself as the lead character of a play. While occupational research, reading job descriptions, and conducting informational interviews are all great ways to learn about an occupation, job shadowing provides a far more realistic portrait of the “day in the life” of the worker. It’s a day-long workplace visit with someone working within a position, career, or industry of interest to you (although it’s important to note virtual job shadows via Zoom or related technology are becoming more common). A job shadowing experience is literally spending time “in the shadow” of a person performing his / her job. Job shadowing, a best practice of Career Literacy™, is an integral part of the “ backwards planning” strategy Career Vision promotes. Job shadowing is a great way to shine a spotlight on careers of interest to you! The Opening Curtain: What is Job Shadowing? Whether you’re a student exploring the world of work as part of the college and career planning process or an adult contemplating a career change, it’s important to get a glimpse behind the scenes to evaluate how well the job suits you. The Urban Health Initiative will provide health disparities education and facilitate clinical shadowing experiences for students.Job Shadowing Sheds Light on the World of Work Southeastern Primary Care Consortium (SPCC) Atlanta Area Health Education Center (AHEC) will collaborate with program administrators to provide health education and college/health career readiness activities. Workshops will include activities to improve personal statements, networking approach, and interview skills. Topics of discussion will include, but are not limited to health disparities, wellness/ mental health, and financial planning. In addition to the activities outlined above, HealthPREP will provide scholars the opportunity to interact with health care providers and attend weekly seminars. A combination of the student’s intellect, drive, and persistence coupled with targeted and comprehensive support will result in increased retention and graduation rates for scholars from disadvantaged backgrounds into the health professions. The intent of this initiative is not just to give students the academic skills needed, but also to increase their resilience and fortitude by giving them personal and professional skills needed to succeed in graduate and professional schools. The overall purpose of the HealthPREP is to facilitate the entry of qualified students from disadvantaged backgrounds, into health-related graduate and professional schools. HealthPREP is an eight-week program facilitated by Emory University School of Medicine and Rollins School of Public Health.
